General information

For the position of Patrol Officer I (entry level):

Minimum Requirements for Application

  1. Citizen of the United States
  2. Minimum 21 years of age
  3. If not a Kentucky resident, must agree to reside in Kentucky within 18 months of appointment. Must also maintain Kentucky residency for duration of employment.
  4. No class A misdemeanor or felony convictions.
  5. A valid driver's license.
  6. Honorable discharge from the military, if applicable.

Physical Fitness

Applicants are required to complete a physical agility assessment based on the Fitness Norms of Law Enforcement, which is established by the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research. It is highly recommended that applicants prepare themselves for this testing. Minimum standards are as follows:

  1. 1.5 mile run - 14 min 54 sec
  2. Flexibility (sit and reach) – 17 inches
  3. Pushups (in 1 minute) - 28
  4. Sit-ups (in 1 minute) - 28
  5. Body fat composition (based on a 3 site total) - 22%
  6. Bench press ratio (as computed below) – Males: 1.03%  Females: 0.65%
  7. 300 meter run - 65 seconds

The bench press ratio is based on a mathematical formula:

  1. Maximum weight lifted in one repetition is the free weight score.
    MALES - 18.41 + (1.016 x free weight score)
    FEMALES - 21.37 + (0.848 x free weight score)
  2. Divide that final value by body weight to get the bench press ratio.

Officers will be required to maintain these fitness standards after hiring.

Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS Physical Standards)

If you are familiar with POPS, note that the physical fitness standards required by the Newport Police Department exceed those required by POPS.  If you can meet the standards above, you can meet the physical standards necessary for Kentucky's Peace Officer Certification.

Training

Those hired will be required to graduate from the Kentucky Department Of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) basic program.  New officers will then undergo on-the-job training with Newport Police Field Training Officers before graduating to regular patrol.   The Kentucky Law Enforcement Foundation Program Fund (KLEFPF) pays an annual incentive of $3100.00 to graduates of DOCJT.  Officers are also required to attend and successfully complete 40 hours of approved in-service training each year.
